A homegrown Nigerian retail success story is unfolding. Sundry Markets Limited, the company behind the Market Square supermarket chain, has announced it has directly employed over 5,000 Nigerians over the past decade, a significant contribution to the nation’s labor force.

The company, recently recognized as one of Africa’s fastest-growing enterprises, now operates across 16 states. Founder and CEO Ebele Enunwa shared the milestone during a 10th anniversary celebration in Port Harcourt, Rivers State. He detailed a journey that began with humble beginnings in Yenagoa, Bayelsa State, and has since expanded to 41 branches nationwide.

“We started this business 10 years ago with nothing,” Enunwa stated. “Today we have 40 stores across the country and we are now the single largest grocery retail chain in Nigeria. That’s a testament to the hard work of thousands of people who come to work every day focused on satisfying and exceeding our customers’ expectations.”

Acknowledging the harsh business climate, Enunwa offered a candid reflection on resilience. “I don’t think anybody ever had it easy. Life is fraught with challenges. How you tackle those challenges is what makes you stand up and rise or fall down and die.”

Board Chairman Charles Odita echoed the growth narrative, calling the company the largest modern retail business in Nigeria. He urged the government to strengthen the value chain by ensuring steady power supply, security, infrastructure, and a healthy business environment.

Executive Director Nnamdi Opara praised Enunwa’s vision and the collective commitment that has driven the chain’s sustained success.
