Lagos State Governor Babajide Sanwo-Olu officially launched the Local Organising Committee for the maiden National Intermediate Games, branded ‘Lagos 2026’, during a ceremony at the Banquet Hall of Lagos House, Marina. He urged the committee to approach their duties with dedication, professionalism, and a clear sense of purpose.

Sanwo-Olu described the committee’s role as a pivotal step in advancing sports development across Nigeria. The games, scheduled for October 2026, aim to provide a platform for young athletes nationwide to discover and showcase their talents, fostering growth and excellence in sports.

The governor emphasized that Lagos’s decision to host the event reflects its commitment to youth empowerment and sports development. He noted that the games would also promote social inclusion, national integration, and cultural exchange among participants from diverse backgrounds.

“The games represent more than a sporting event. They are an investment into the future of our young people and an avenue to strengthen unity and create opportunities through sports,” Sanwo-Olu said.

During a courtesy visit by the LOC, led by National Sports Commission Director-General Hon. Bukola Olopade, Sanwo-Olu reiterated his administration’s high regard for sports and its commitment to elevating the sector. He commended the reforms spearheaded by the NSC’s leadership, stating, “Sporting activities are not magic; they are a deliberate, intentional investment that you must build up on. You must create, follow up and follow through to get to the desire you want.”

Olopade praised Lagos State for its sustained investment in sports infrastructure and youth development, noting the state’s consistent leadership in hosting major events. “The 8.8 trillion dollar economy of sports that is going to happen in the next 20 years has Lagos with a footprint in it already. It is not a difficult decision for us to choose Lagos as the host state for the maiden National Intermediate Games. Lagos has been a pillar of support for us in the National Sports Commission in every aspect of sporting activities,” he said.

Speaking on behalf of the LOC, Lagos State Commissioner for Youth and Social Development and Co-Chairman Mobolaji Ogunlende thanked Sanwo-Olu for the trust placed in the committee. He assured that members would work tirelessly to deliver a successful tournament, positively impacting millions of Nigerian youths and positioning them for global opportunities.

The National Intermediate Games will bring together young athletes from across the country, serving as a pathway for talent identification, development, and national sports growth.
