President Bola Tinubu has extended his congratulations to Ambassador Jimoh Ibrahim, Nigeria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations, following his election as Chair of the UN General Assembly’s Fifth Committee on Budget and Administration. The announcement came Wednesday, with Tinubu praising the achievement as a testament to Ibrahim’s extensive experience in public service, diplomacy, and business leadership.
In his message, the President underscored the timing of Ibrahim’s election, noting it comes at a pivotal moment for the UN as it undertakes significant financial restructuring and institutional reforms. “Your election to chair this important committee within weeks of official resumption at the UN validates your wealth of experience in public service, diplomacy, business leadership, and governance, particularly as a member of the Nigerian Senate Committee on Budget and Appropriation and Chairman of Inter-Parliamentary Relations,” Tinubu said.
He highlighted Ibrahim’s background as a legal scholar with expertise in international taxation and business administration, stating, “You have consistently demonstrated intellectual acumen and a deep understanding of global governance and financial systems, providing valuable insight into fiscal management, institutional efficiency, and sustainable growth.”
The President expressed confidence that Ibrahim’s leadership would mirror the positive reforms underway in Nigeria. “Your experience and unwavering commitment to excellence will justify your selection as Permanent Representative and make Nigeria proud,” he added.
Meanwhile, Ibrahim is set to deliver a keynote address today at the Tenth Anniversary Conference of the Ife Institute of Advanced Studies at Harvard University. The invitation, extended by Professor Jacob Olupona of Harvard’s Department of African and African American Studies, tasks Ibrahim with speaking on “The Nigerian Project Revisited: Crisis, Continuity, and Possibility.” The conference aims to explore how Africa can build institutions capable of sustaining excellence, building on the IIAS’s decade-long work of training over 850 scholars.
