Ekiti PDP in Turmoil as Fayose Backs Governor, Candidate Fires Back

Ekiti PDP explodes as Fayose endorses Governor Oyebanji, sparking a fierce rebuttal from party candidate Oluyede over performance and loyalty.

Biodun-Oyebanji

A fierce political storm is brewing within the Ekiti State chapter of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) after former Governor Ayodele Fayose threw his weight behind Governor Biodun Oyebanji, a move that has drawn sharp rebuke from the party’s own governorship candidate, Dr. Wole Oluyede.

Fayose stood firm in his endorsement of Oyebanji and President Bola Tinubu, insisting that both leaders have shown genuine commitment to governance, inclusiveness, and development. He argued that his support was a matter of performance, not party loyalty.

“Oyebanji has carried everyone along. His style of leadership has reduced political tension and promoted inclusiveness. When a leader is doing well, it is only fair to acknowledge it regardless of political differences,” Fayose said.

The former governor also praised President Tinubu for what he called courageous efforts to tackle Nigeria’s economic and governance challenges. He acknowledged that some reforms, though painful, are necessary for long-term growth and stability. Fayose urged political actors to put public interest above partisan lines and judge leaders by their results, not their party badges.

But Oluyede was quick to push back. Speaking from his country home in Ikere-Ekiti, the PDP candidate made it clear that he sees things very differently.

“I have tremendous respect for Fayose and his right to make political choices. However, I hold a different view regarding the performance of the present administration and the direction the state should be taking,” Oluyede said.

He argued that governance must be measured against the real needs of the people, especially in security, infrastructure, and public services. While endorsements are personal, Oluyede stressed that the ultimate power lies with the voters.

“Every stakeholder is entitled to his opinion. What is important is that the people of Ekiti will ultimately determine the direction they want the state to go through their votes,” he stated.

The PDP candidate expressed confidence that Ekiti residents will carefully weigh the records and promises of all candidates before casting their ballots. He also called for stronger security and better public infrastructure, insisting that government performance must always be measured against the people’s expectations.

Despite their sharp disagreement over Oyebanji, both Fayose and Oluyede surprisingly found common ground on President Tinubu. Oluyede reaffirmed his long-standing support for the President, describing it as a matter of conviction, while Fayose maintained that Tinubu’s reforms deserve backing.

This clash highlights a deepening rift within the PDP as the next governorship election in Ekiti State draws closer, with political tensions rising and alliances shifting.
