An Upper Area Court in Karu, Abuja, sentenced 29‑year‑old Imo Sunday to four months’ imprisonment for stealing a mobile phone valued at N43,000. The judge, Hassan Mohammed, imposed the sentence after Sunday pleaded guilty to theft and asked for leniency. He also gave Sunday the option of paying a N10,000 fine and ordered him to compensate the complainant with the full N43,000 value of the phone.
Prosecution counsel Olanrewaju Osho explained that the case was reported by Udeh Emmanuel of Jikwoyi, Abuja, at Nyanya Police Station. According to Osho, on 26 January, while the complainant was under the Nyanya bridge, Sunday conspired with an accomplice—who remains at large—to defraud him. Sunday, claiming to be a prophet of God, deceived Emmanuel and took his Infinix phone, worth N43,000, before fleeing with his partner.
The prosecutor noted that a police investigation led to Sunday’s arrest after he was sighted at a specific location, and that he confessed to the offence, which breaches Sections 97 and 322 of the Penal Code.
