Operatives of the Edo State Police Command have arrested four suspects who specialized in robbing unsuspecting members of the public while disguised in military uniform. The suspects, who are also alleged members of cult groups that terrorize residents of Benin, the state capital, were apprehended by the Intelligence Unit after a petition was filed by Grace Ainabe concerning a robbery at her home.
According to the command’s spokesperson, SP Chidi Nwabuzor, the arrested individuals are Iyabor Victor, 35; Osas Aganmwonyi, 28; Nosa Owie, 24; and Idi Etukudo. The men broke into Ainabe’s house in Teboga Community, off Lucky Way, wearing army camouflage. They entered through the ceiling, brandished guns, and stole money, phones, and jewellery. Nwabuzor said the suspects forced the family to transfer ₦447,000 from the victim’s account, obtaining her phone and PIN to gain access. After converting the money to foreign currency, they divided the proceeds among themselves before being captured.
Items recovered from the suspects include an iPhone 13 valued at ₦500,000, an iPhone 6 worth ₦48,000, jewellery amounting to ₦850,000, table fans (₦140,000), standing fans (₦95,000), an LG split air conditioner (₦360,000), a washing machine, inverter battery accessories, gas cylinders, and other belongings.
Victor, identified as the prime suspect, claimed that an in‑law of the victim, named Johanna, provided the information needed to carry out the robbery. He also said he obtained the military uniform from the house of a deceased military officer. “We entered the woman’s house through the ceiling, forcefully collected her PIN and transferred the money in her account,” Victor added.
