Gunmen reportedly attacked the convoy of Delta State governorship candidate of the Peoples Democratic Party, Sheriff Oborevwori. A statement issued by Oborevwori’s Chief Press Secretary, Dennis Otu, and provided to journalists in Warri on Tuesday, disclosed that the incident occurred on Sunday along the Warri‑Sapele highway. Hoodlums ambushed the convoy and opened fire on the vehicles as the Delta PDP candidate, who also serves as Speaker of the state House of Assembly, was returning from Sapele to Osubi.

Oborevwori’s spokesman noted that this is the second attempt on his life within two months. The first occurred on Wednesday, 11 January 2023, when assassins disguised as police officers opened fire on his convoy along the same highway while he was traveling to Koko, Warri North Local Government Area, for the commissioning of the ultra‑modern floating market, Ogheye.

The statement detailed the March 12, 2023 attack: “The convoy of the Delta State PDP governorship candidate, Sheriff Oborevwori, came under heavy attack from gunmen between Elume junction and Okuabude in Okpe Local Government Area at about 9:05 pm. The car he was traveling in and the security vehicles attached to the convoy were riddled with bullets.” After political meetings in Sapele, the unknown gunmen ambushed the convoy on the return trip to Osubi, spraying his car and backup vehicles with fire.

“Only the grace of God and the fact that he was riding in a bullet‑proof car saved the life of the leading governorship hopeful,” the statement read. “His brave security men rose to the occasion, engaging the suspected assassins in a duel that lasted over ten minutes before the gunmen fled into the darkness of the night.” No fatalities were reported, though one security officer sustained injuries. The incident has been reported to the police for further investigation.
