Traders affected by the Monday fire at the Singer market in Kano State have appealed to both the federal and state governments for assistance to alleviate their suffering. Speaking to reporters on Tuesday, trader Alhaji Abdulkadir Singer emphasized the need for support to cushion the impact of the disaster. He reported that the blaze destroyed more than 300 shops, affecting at least 500 traders. Many of those traders employ between five and ten workers, so the loss extends beyond the owners themselves. “On behalf of the traders’ chairman, I appeal to Governor Abdullahi Ganduje and President Muhammadu Buhari for help, as most of us have lost everything in the fire,” he said.
Another trader, Shamsudeen Bello, lamented that the incident occurred while people are already struggling with the federal government’s currency‑swap policy. He noted that the fire, combined with the recent naira issues, has compounded the problem and crippled market activities. Bello urged both state and federal authorities to assist the affected traders to ease their hardships. He also praised the prompt response of the State Fire Service personnel and private companies for their timely intervention during the blaze.
