In a display of sheer resilience and brilliance, Lionel Messi and Argentina pulled off a breathtaking comeback to defeat Egypt 3-2 in the World Cup round of 32, booking their spot in the quarterfinals. The defending champions looked down and out, trailing 2-0 with just over 20 minutes remaining, before a furious rally turned the game on its head.

Egypt stunned the Albiceleste early, taking the lead in the 15th minute through a Yasser Ibrahim header. The Pharaohs doubled their advantage in the 67th minute when Mostafa Zico finished a swift counter-attack, moments after having a goal controversially disallowed by VAR for a foul deep in midfield. Argentina, who had missed a penalty earlier through Messi, seemed headed for an early exit.

But the comeback began in the 79th minute. Defender Cristian Romero powered home a free header from a corner, giving Argentina a lifeline. Then, just minutes later, the immortal Messi struck. He slotted home his 21st career World Cup goal to level the score, becoming the tournament’s all-time leading scorer and silencing the Egyptian defense.

The drama reached its peak in the 92nd minute. Enzo Fernandez rose to meet a cross from a rapid counter-attack, heading the ball past Egypt’s goalkeeper to send the Atlanta crowd into a frenzy. The goal capped off a stunning turnaround for the South American giants, who had struggled in their previous match against Cape Verde.

Argentina now advances to face either Switzerland or Colombia in the quarterfinals on July 11 in Kansas City. For Egypt, the loss is a heartbreaking end to a campaign where they pushed the champions to the brink.
