Organ Harvesting: I trust him, he’s good man – Beatrice Ekweremadu defends husband

Beatrice Ekweremadu, the wife of former Deputy Senate President, Ike Ekweremadu, on Tuesday, testified in her and her husband’s organ harvesting trial at the Central Criminal Court of England and Wales, also called Old Bailey, London.

Mrs Ekweremadu and her husband are accused of plotting with one Dr Obinna Obeta to arrange an illegal kidney transplant for their ailing daughter Sonia who is also named as a defendant in the trial.

The couple allegedly conspired to transport a young man, a 21-year-old trader from Lagos, Nigeria, to London to harvest his organ.

However, with the trial entering its seventh week on Tuesday, a teary Mrs Ekweremadu took the stand in her husband’s defence, saying, “My husband is a good man and I have come to trust him.”

The plaintiff attempted to find out how much information Mrs Ekweremadu knew about who the alleged victim was.

But the 56-year-old accountant said she was not aware of a number of affairs on the home front, telling the court that as a woman with a powerful politician and lawyer for a husband, she refrained from questioning him.

The victim had testified that he had no knowledge of the fact that he was being brought to the United Kingdom for his organs to be harvested, insisting that he only knew about the organ donation when he visited private doctors at the Royal Free Hospital.

In the meantime, Ekweremadu will remain in custody while the trial of his family and Obeta continues at the Old Bailey house in London.
