UK-based startup Cipher X has introduced a microneedle patch technology that promises permanent tattoos without the pain of traditional needles, though the method currently faces significant limitations regarding size, colour, and availability.

Founded by chief executive Ferdinand Cole, who cited a personal fear of needles and blood as motivation, the company adapts microneedling techniques long used in cosmetology. The process uses a patch covered in microscopic structures that deposit pigment into the upper layers of skin. Applied via a specialised applicator, the patch remains in place for approximately 15 minutes. The design initially appears faint but darkens to full visibility within 24 to 48 hours. Unlike temporary transfers, these are permanent tattoos requiring laser removal.

However, the technology is constrained. Designs must fit within a 15-millimetre circular canvas, restricting artwork to small symbols such as hearts or emojis. Pigment is currently limited to black ink, with no confirmed timeline for colour options. The company plans to collaborate with tattoo artists for custom designs in the future. For now, the service is only offered at the company’s London location.

While the innovation addresses a key barrier for potential tattoo clients, its current scope prevents it from replacing conventional methods for larger or multi-coloured work. Observers will watch whether Cipher X can scale the canvas size and pigment range to broaden the technology’s appeal beyond niche, minimalist applications.
