Four vehicles collided at the Tech Junction-Top High intersection in the Oforikrom Municipality of Ghana’s Ashanti Region on Sunday morning, causing a brief traffic disruption during the morning rush hour.
The crash occurred around 7:15 a.m. when an ambulance, registration GV 554-24, attempted to navigate through gridlocked traffic with its siren activated. According to multiple eyewitnesses, the emergency vehicle was traveling on the Ejisu-bound stretch and tried to weave between lanes of vehicles stopped at a red traffic light. Insufficient space forced the ambulance into contact with two stationary vehicles, triggering a chain reaction that pushed those vehicles into two others ahead.
“The ambulance was in a hurry and tried to pass through the middle,” said one driver whose vehicle was damaged. “But the cars were already packed because of the red light. That’s how it hit the first car and pushed it into the others.”
Another motorist at the scene acknowledged the siren but noted the physical constraints. “We heard the siren, but the cars were already packed because the traffic light was red. The ambulance should have used the other lane. We understand the urgency, but the road was blocked. You can’t force your way and expect other drivers to just disappear.”
Speaking off camera, the ambulance driver said he was transporting a patient in a medical emergency and needed to move quickly through traffic. Following the collision, authorities dispatched a backup ambulance to continue the patient’s transfer to hospital.
Personnel from the Adum Division of the Ghana Police Service and the Ghana National Fire Service arrived shortly after to manage traffic flow, document the incident, and assess vehicle damage. No deaths or injuries were reported at the scene, according to eyewitnesses. All four vehicles sustained damage to bumpers and fenders.
Tow trucks were deployed to clear the wreckage, resulting in a temporary traffic build-up along the Top High stretch before normal flow resumed. Police have not yet issued a formal statement on liability or potential traffic violations.
