The Osun State Police Command has confirmed the release of Moyowa Adejoorin, the state’s Commissioner for Environment and Sanitation, who was detained over a chaotic shooting at an All Progressives Congress (APC) rally in Ilesa that left four people wounded, including a teenager named Tobi Ilesanmi. The incident, which unfolded on Saturday, has sparked outrage and intense scrutiny across the state.
Adejoorin’s arrest came after police officers swarmed the rally site, securing the perimeter and scouring for evidence. According to DSP Abiodun Ojelabi, the command’s spokesperson, the commissioner’s vehicle was intercepted at the location, where an Amotekun operative allegedly tied to the gunfire was also taken into custody. “Immediately the incident was reported, our personnel moved to the scene and cordoned off the area before some exhibits were recovered, which included expended cartridges and Amotekun personnel caps,” Ojelabi said. “Also, Mr Adejoorin was arrested at the scene and taken to the command for questioning as part of the investigation process.”
The case has drawn heightened attention after a viral video surfaced on social media on Sunday, showing Adejoorin exiting the police command building, fueling speculation about the trajectory of the probe. In a fresh update, Ojelabi confirmed to Vanguard that the commissioner has been granted bail, though he remained tight-lipped on the fate of the Amotekun operative arrested alongside him. “It is true that the commissioner has been released on bail today, but I am yet to clear the situation with the Amotekun personnel arrested with him,” he noted.
As police continue to piece together the circumstances that turned a political gathering into a scene of violence, residents and party loyalists alike are demanding answers. The investigation remains ongoing, with authorities vowing to leave no stone unturned in unravelling the shooting that has cast a shadow over the rally.
