The issue surfaced last month following a report by the Dutch cycling publication WielerFlits, which detailed concerns that some competitors are using padding to increase their bust area. According to aerodynamic experts, a smaller bust can create an air pocket at the abdomen that marginally increases drag. By modifying this profile, riders may reduce resistance.
Bert Blocken, a professor of aerodynamics at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, told the British newspaper The Telegraph that chest fairing could yield a drag reduction of up to 3.6 percent. While the figure appears small, the sport’s fine margins mean even fractional gains can determine race outcomes, prompting governing bodies to treat the practice as a potential violation.
The controversy prompted immediate action at this year’s Tour de France Femmes. On August 4, race organizers conducted additional clothing inspections targeting compliance with Article 1.3.032 of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) regulations. The rule prohibits non-essential elements — including clothing, accessories, or other items — that modify a rider’s morphology.
“Special attention will be given to compliance with article 1.3.032 of the UCI regulations, including non-essential elements and clothing or other items used by the cyclist that may modify the cyclists’ morphology,” read an official statement from the Tour de France organization.
It remains unclear whether the inspections uncovered specific violations. However, the checks signal a clear intent to discourage the practice before it becomes normalized. The UCI has not yet announced formal sanctions or rule amendments, but the episode has intensified scrutiny on equipment and apparel standards in women’s racing.
The debate echoes longstanding tensions in cycling between technological innovation and regulatory control. As teams pursue marginal gains through fabrics, helmet shapes, and riding positions, the governing body faces pressure to define the boundary between legitimate optimization and morphological manipulation.
