Women’s professional cycling is confronting an unusual controversy over allegations that some competitors are using padded bras to alter their body shape for aerodynamic gain. The practice, dubbed “chest fairing,” involves adding padding to the bust area to smooth airflow around the torso and potentially reduce drag during races.
The issue surfaced last month when Dutch cycling publication WielerFlits reported that riders were exploiting the technique to secure a competitive edge. According to Bert Blocken, a professor of aerodynamics at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland, the method works by eliminating a small air pocket that forms at the abdomen when a rider has a smaller bust. That pocket, he told The Telegraph, marginally increases the drag coefficient. Blocken estimated that chest fairing could cut drag by as much as 3.6 percent — a figure that matters deeply in a sport where victories are often decided by fractions of a second.
The claims prompted swift action from race organizers. On August 4, cyclists participating in the Tour de France Femmes were subjected to additional clothing inspections aimed at detecting non‑essential items that modify a rider’s morphology. The checks were conducted under Article 1.3.032 of the Union Cycliste Internationale (UCI) regulations, which prohibit clothing or accessories — including helmets, glasses, shoes, or communication devices — that alter a cyclist’s natural shape for aerodynamic benefit.
“Special attention will be given to compliance with article 1.3.032 of the UCI regulations, including non‑essential elements and clothing or other items and accessories used by the cyclist that may modify the cyclists’ morphology,” the Tour de France said in an official statement.
It remains unclear whether the inspections uncovered any violations, but the federation’s decision to implement targeted controls signals a determination to curb the practice before it spreads. The episode highlights the endless pursuit of marginal gains in elite sport and the regulatory challenge of policing innovations that blur the line between equipment and anatomy.
As the governing body refines its enforcement approach, teams and riders will be watching closely. The outcome could shape how aerodynamic regulations are written — and interpreted — across cycling and other speed‑dependent disciplines for years to come.
