Kwara Police Arrest Kidnap Suspect Over N1.6m AK-47 Deal

Kwara State police have arrested a suspected kidnapper allegedly attempting to procure an AK-47 rifle for 1.6 million naira in Kaiama Local Government Area. The suspect, identified as Sanda Aliyu, was taken into custody by operatives of the command’s Anti-Kidnapping Section following intelligence that he was negotiating the purchase with one Aliyu Mohammed, who remains at large.

Detectives moved swiftly on the intelligence and apprehended Aliyu before the weapon could change hands. According to a statement by the state Police Public Relations Officer, Adetoun Ejire-Adeyemi, the suspect confessed during interrogation to his role in the attempted arms transaction. He reportedly acknowledged that the 1.6 million naira had already been paid toward the rifle.

Aliyu further disclosed that his intention in acquiring the firearm was to elevate his rank to “Boss” within his current kidnapping gang, with a longer-term plan to break away and establish his own criminal network. The revelation offers a rare glimpse into the internal hierarchy and ambitions driving armed banditry in the region.

Investigators have launched a broader probe to verify the transaction details, identify other individuals linked to the attempted purchase, and map the full extent of the criminal network. Reacting to the arrest, Kwara State Commissioner of Police Ojo Adekimi reiterated the command’s commitment to sustained intelligence-led operations against criminal elements across the state.
