Osun State Governor Ademola Adeleke has announced the establishment of an independent commission of inquiry to investigate reported extrajudicial killings and other violent incidents linked to Saturday’s governorship election. The announcement was made on Friday in Osogbo through a statement delivered by the Commissioner for Information, Kolapo Alimi.
Adeleke expressed deep condolences to families who lost loved ones during the election period and pledged that the inquiry would commence immediately after the vote. “The Osun State Government expresses its deepest condolences to the families of all persons who have tragically lost their lives in incidents of violence during this election period,” the governor said. “Every life lost is an Osun life. Politics should never cost anyone his or her life, irrespective of political affiliation.”
The commission will be tasked with investigating all reported killings and acts of violence connected to the election, establishing the circumstances of each case, and recommending appropriate actions to ensure accountability. Adeleke emphasized that the probe would pursue justice without regard to political affiliation, position, or influence. “The commission will establish the circumstances surrounding these incidents and recommend appropriate actions to ensure that everyone responsible is brought to justice, regardless of political affiliation, position or influence,” he said.
Beyond accountability, the administration plans to create a support and compensation framework for victims’ families. The governor promised that victims would be properly honoured and stressed the importance of unity beyond the electoral cycle. “The election will come and go, but we will remain one people. We owe the dead justice, their families compassion, and the people of Osun a peaceful future,” Adeleke said.
The move comes amid a surge in reported violence across the state in recent months, with suspected cult groups allegedly linked to political actors implicated in multiple killings. Security analysts have long warned that the intersection of cultism and electoral competition has fuelled cycles of reprisal attacks, particularly during election seasons. Civil society groups have repeatedly called for independent investigations into political violence, arguing that impunity emboldens perpetrators and undermines public trust in democratic processes.
The governor’s commitment to a transparent inquiry and victim compensation marks a significant policy response. However, observers note that the effectiveness of the commission will depend on its composition, operational independence, and the political will to implement its recommendations. Previous panels in the state have faced criticism for delays and lack of follow-through on prosecutions.
As Osun prepares for the governorship election, the focus on accountability signals an acknowledgment of the human cost of electoral violence.
