A group of concerned citizens from Oyo State, organized under the League of Progressives for Good Governance, publicly criticized Governor Seyi Makinde of the All Progressives Congress and APC candidate Teslim Folarin over the state’s insecurity. Speaking through General Secretary Lekan Adeyemo at the Nigeria Union of Journalists press centre in Iyaganku, Ibadan, the group also endorsed Accord Party candidate Bayo Adelabu for Saturday’s election.
The group warned that Oyo is at a critical juncture in its history and urged citizens to reflect on the “pitiable state” of the region. They described the current situation as a result of bad governance, a lack of vision, and insufficient capacity to lift the state out of its difficulties. “We must not allow things to continue as they are,” they said, emphasizing the need to choose wisely at the polls. According to them, incumbent Governor Makinde, who is seeking re‑election, “has nothing more to offer” the state.
Security, they noted, has become a daily nightmare, with innocent residents living in constant fear of attacks by criminal elements led by Mukaila Lamidi, known as “Auxilliary.” They called it “unthinkable” that a governor who pledged to protect his people would leave them at the mercy of an ex‑convict who should be “excommunicated in a saner society.”
Adeyemo lamented that Oyo has slipped off the development radar, falling behind other states on virtually all development indices. He criticized APC candidate Teslim Folarin, describing him as a career politician with no professional background beyond politics, unfit to govern a state once led by intellectual giants such as the late Bola Ige and Omololu Olunloyo.
In contrast, the group presented Accord Party’s standard‑bearer, Bayo Adelabu, as the candidate to beat. They highlighted his progressive ideology and extensive experience, noting his former role as deputy governor of the Central Bank and his background in corporate governance and development. According to the group, electing Adelabu is the only way to save Oyo from imminent collapse.
