Emmy-nominated director Alexandria Stapleton says she hopes the upcoming trial of Duane “Keffe D” Davis will bring long-sought answers and closure to the family, friends, and fans of Tupac Shakur, whose 1996 killing remains one of hip-hop’s most enduring mysteries.
Stapleton’s Netflix documentary, “Sean Combs: The Reckoning,” has earned three Emmy nominations, including best documentary. The film examines the relationships between Sean Combs, Shakur, Davis, and others allegedly connected to the shooting. Its release has renewed public scrutiny of the case.
Davis faces a charge of murder with a deadly weapon in connection with Shakur’s death in Las Vegas. He has pleaded not guilty. The documentary presents available evidence, including recordings in which Davis allegedly claimed that Combs hired him to carry out the killing.
“As of right now, they’re allegations,” Stapleton said, emphasizing that the trial will determine how the claims stand up in court. Combs is not charged in connection with Shakur’s death and has previously denied any involvement.
Stapleton described Shakur’s influence as powerful decades after his death, characterizing him as an artist who used music, poetry, and writing to confront difficult social realities. “I think that his legacy will only continue to live on,” she said.
