In a swift overnight operation that caught a suspected theft syndicate off guard, the Bauchi State Police Command has recovered a haul of vandalised railway sleepers and taken a prime suspect into custody. The breakthrough came after a tip-off sent officers from the A Division Township on a trail that ended not at a warehouse or a hidden depot, but at a private residence in the Doya Quarters of Bauchi metropolis.
The raid, which kicked off at around 12:30 am on August 17, 2026, was triggered by credible intelligence about the ongoing vandalism of railway infrastructure within the city. What the operatives found at the residential building defied their initial expectations—they had braced for a more clandestine setup, perhaps a government facility or a secluded storage site. Instead, the stolen railway sleepers were sitting right there, in plain sight, in a neighbourhood home.
The entire consignment was recovered and moved to the police station, with the operation wrapping up by 3:30 am on August 18. That’s when officers arrested Abubakar Sanusi, a male suspect believed to be a key player in the syndicate behind the theft of public property. The police have not ruled out more arrests, confirming that investigations are ongoing to smoke out the other members of the group.
In a statement, the command’s Public Relations Officer, SP Nafiu Habib, stressed the importance of community vigilance in protecting national assets.
