Kenya’s Ethics and Anti-Corruption Commission (EACC) and the Swedish government have agreed to deepen bilateral cooperation targeting increasingly sophisticated financial crimes, including the concealment of digital assets and illicit financial flows across borders.

EACC Chief Executive Officer Abdi Mohamud hosted Sweden’s Ambassador to Kenya, Lars Håkan Åkesson, at the Integrity Centre in Nairobi for talks centered on strengthening anti-corruption frameworks, promoting good governance, and building institutional capacity. The discussions highlighted the evolving nature of corruption, with criminals exploiting complex financial structures and emerging technologies to hide and move illicitly acquired wealth.

Both parties identified countering sophisticated financial structures, digital asset concealment, and illicit financial flows as priority areas. Ambassador Åkesson emphasized that robust accountability systems are essential for creating an investment-friendly environment and sustaining economic growth, noting that strong integrity frameworks directly boost investor confidence.

The partnership aims to strengthen integrity mechanisms not only in Kenya but across the wider Eastern Africa region. EACC leadership stressed that international collaboration remains critical to enhancing the agency’s ability to prevent, investigate, and respond to corruption and financial crimes that transcend national boundaries.

Institutional capacity building sits at the core of the agreement, with both sides expecting stronger systems and technical capabilities to improve anti-corruption outcomes and accountability in public institutions. The talks reflect growing global attention on illicit financial flows and the use of new technologies to obscure proceeds of corruption, making cross-border cooperation increasingly vital for tracing assets and holding perpetrators accountable.

EACC reaffirmed its commitment to strategic international partnerships as part of broader efforts to promote accountability, integrity, and good governance in Kenya.
