Nigeria was ranked the eighth‑most terrorised country in the world in 2022, down from sixth place in 2021. According to the 2023 Global Terrorism Index, terrorist activity in the country fell to its lowest level since 2011. Between 2017 and 2020, Nigeria had been the fourth‑most terrorised nation, and it ranked second in both 2015 and 2016.
The insurgency by Boko Haram and the Islamic State West Africa Province has claimed thousands of lives in Nigeria’s northeast since 2009, but the groups were more restrained in 2022. The report noted that deaths in Nigeria peaked in 2014 at 2,101 before declining in five of the subsequent nine years. Terror‑related deaths dropped from 497 in 2021 to 385 in 2022, and the number of attacks fell from 214 in 2021 to 120, the lowest figure recorded since 2011.
