The Labour Party’s governorship candidate for Lagos State, Gbadebo Rhodes‑Vivour, has denied any godfather backing his bid for the governorship—a claim made by Peoples Democratic Party candidate Abdul‑Azeez Olajide Adediran, known as Jandor. Rhodes‑Vivour made his remarks on Thursday morning during an interview with Arise News.
Jandor had alleged on Tuesday that Rhodes‑Vivour was being endorsed by godfathers, specifically naming PDP chieftain Chief Bode George. “I fought against godfatherism in the APC, Lagos. My refusal to recognise Chief Bode George as a godfather in the PDP is a major reason for his endorsement of Gbadebo Rhodes‑Vivour of the LP against my candidature in the PDP,” Jandor said.
In response, Rhodes‑Vivour asserted that there is no godfather in the Labour Party and that he has none. He clarified, “In the Labour Party, there’s no godfather. I have no godfather. I had no godfather in the PDP; I only had mentors and leaders.” He also addressed rumors of embezzled funds meant for rallies and elections, noting that the narrative used to secure his ticket was that he would bring half of the APC into the PDP. “That was the story, but all of them have gone back to the APC now. Where is the value?” he asked.
Rhodes‑Vivour explained that he obtained the ticket because national party leaders, from Ayu to Obasanjo, supported him. He concluded by pointing out the irony of Jandor’s current accusations, saying, “Now that the tables have turned, he’s talking about godfatherism.”
