The governorship candidate of the New Nigeria People’s Party (NNPP) in Ogun State, Olufemi Ajadi, alleges that former governor Ibikunle Amosun tried to persuade him to step down in favor of his preferred candidate, Biyi Otegbeye of the African Democratic Congress. Ajadi said he rejected the promises offered by Amosun, emphasizing that his party is not allied with any other political party and that such a move would be contrary to the interests of the people of the state.
Speaking in Abeokuta on Thursday, Ajadi explained that when Otegbeye’s candidacy was still being contested in court, he met with Amosun, who expressed a desire to support him. However, the meeting did not produce a positive outcome because Otegbeye eventually won the case. “Amosun was the only one who called me to step down for Biyi Otegbeye and offered me many things, but I could not agree because I can’t sell Nigerian youths; I am an ambassador for them,” Ajadi said. He affirmed that he remains in the race, with no intention of abandoning his ambition or forming any alliance with other parties or candidates.
Ajadi also denied rumors that his party would collapse the structure for the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) governorship candidate, Ladi Adebutu. He asserted, “Nobody has the funds to buy my party or me; no politician in Nigeria has that money to buy me off the ballot. As long as I stand as an ambassador for Nigerian youths, I can never sell out.” He added that the NNPP is not negotiating with any political party and is not ready to do so.
Although some have suggested that forming alliances with other parties is advantageous, Ajadi said he does not share that view, believing that only God can enthrone a leader. He expressed shock upon learning that his party had allegedly formed an alliance with the PDP, noting that those involved did not inform him as the party’s candidate, which he said is not how such matters should be handled.
