About 850 officers from the Nigeria Security and Civil Defence Corps (NSCDC) have been deployed in Gombe State ahead of the gubernatorial and state assembly elections scheduled for Saturday, March 19. In a statement, NSCDC Public Relations Officer DSC Sa’ad Buhari quoted State Commandant Achir Abraham as addressing Area Commanders and Divisional Officers at the Command’s headquarters in Gombe. Abraham urged the officers to maintain the highest level of professionalism during and after the poll, emphasizing that those who defaulted would face sanctions.
The command’s directive stressed that the deployed officers must “uphold the ethics of professionalism and be apolitical in the conduct of the electoral process.” Abraham also assured Gombe residents that the NSCDC would provide adequate protection for lives and property, and he called for close cooperation with all security agencies to ensure a smooth, fair election. He added that special attention would be given to safeguarding critical national assets and infrastructure throughout the exercise.
Our correspondent notes that, of the 12 political parties contesting the gubernatorial election, eight have endorsed Governor Muhammadu Yahaya as their candidate. Five parties have aligned behind the All Progressives Congress candidate, Brigadier General Nuhu Miller, while the Labour Party’s Keftin Amuga, the New Nigeria Peoples’ Party’s Khamisu Mailantarki, and the Peoples’ Democratic Party’s Muhammad Barde are running independently, without any alliance.
