Suspected thieves broke into the newly inaugurated 100‑bed Mother and Child Hospital in Iperu, Ikenne Local Government Area of Ogun State, a month after its commissioning. The hospital was commissioned on Saturday, 1 February 2023, by Vice President Prof. Yemi Osinbajo.

The thieves reportedly stole electronic equipment worth millions of naira. The state commandant of the Security Network, also known as the Amotekun Corps, David Akinremi, confirmed the incident in a statement to journalists in Abeokuta on Friday. He said his operatives have arrested three suspects in connection with the crime. The stolen items include six 43‑inch Hisense TV sets, two 65‑inch Bruhm TV sets, three Bruhm refrigerators, one Midea refrigerator, and three Lontor rechargeable standing fans, valued at about N3 million.

According to Akinremi, the prime suspect, Ogunjembola Kehinde, led the gang that burgled the hospital. Ogunjembola was first arrested after a complaint by Kehinde Banjoko, who reported that unknown persons broke into her residence while she was away in Lagos and stole household items—generators, a gas cylinder, a standing fan, mattresses, a rug, among others—valued at roughly N500,000. Based on actionable intelligence, Ogunjembola was detained and, upon interrogation, admitted to the crime together with an accomplice who remains at large. His confession led to the recovery of all items stolen from Lawal Aliu, identified as the criminal receiver.

While the investigation into Banjoko’s original complaint was ongoing, further intelligence revealed that the same principal suspect, Ogunjembola Kehinde, and his gang were also responsible for the break‑in at the Mother and Child Hospital. When confronted, Ogunjembola admitted to the hospital theft as well, confirming his involvement with the same co‑accomplice.

Akinremi noted that three suspects have been arrested so far, and efforts continue to apprehend other criminal receivers mentioned by the suspects, with the aim of recovering items allegedly sold to them.
