The Anambra State Police Command announced that it has received arms and ammunition from Inspector General of Police Alkali Baba Usman in preparation for Saturday’s House of Assembly election. The police praised the IGP for providing the anti‑riot equipment, emphasizing that it is intended to maintain law and order during the poll. State police spokesman DSP Tochukwu Ikenga conveyed this information in a statement on Friday, speaking on behalf of the state Commissioner of Police (Election), Aderemi Adeoye.
The command warned criminal elements and thugs to abandon any plans to disrupt law and order before, during, or after the elections. Ikenga also noted that AIG Rudolf Obe Echebi has assumed duty as the AIG Election for the Anambra and Enugu commands, which together form Zone 13 with its headquarters in Ukpo, Dunukofia LGA, Anambra State. The AIG arrived on Thursday, 16 March 2023, and was received by senior officers at the zonal headquarters in Ukpo. He subsequently visited the State Police Command headquarters, where he reviewed security arrangements for the state House of Assembly election, before proceeding to the Enugu State Command to continue his assignment.
The Commissioner of Police (Election) briefed the AIG on programmes designed to involve all stakeholders and ensure peace, especially after the election. Other senior officers deployed in Anambra for the election include DCP Johnson Adenola (Anambra South), DCP Polycarp Emeka (Anambra Central), and DCP Yusuf Ajape (Anambra North Senatorial Districts).
