Governor of Anambra State, Prof. Chukwuma Soludo, has said that his administration has no specific information about any allegation or basis for the arrest of Twitter user Nnamdi Chude. The Press Secretary, Christian Aburime, issued a statement on Sunday confirming that Chude was arrested on Saturday by the Cyber Crime Unit of Interpol and taken to Abuja, but emphasizing that the state government lacks details about the charges.
Chude had sparked controversy on Saturday by tweeting that thugs, allegedly linked to the ruling All Progressives Grand Alliance, invaded several polling units and snatched ballot boxes during the state assembly election. He expressed disappointment, writing, “I can’t remember the last time I heard of ballot box snatching in Anambra; this is the height of it. @CCSoludo has taken us back to Mbadinuju’s era.” According to our correspondent, police operatives from Onitsha later picked him up and transferred him to the State Criminal Investigation Department in Awka, where he was reportedly detained on a cyber‑crime charge. The Press Secretary’s two‑paragraph statement, captioned “Re: Arrest of one Mr Chude by the police,” reiterated that the Commissioner of Police, Anambra State Police Command, had confirmed the arrest on March 18, 2023, and that the state government has no information about any specific allegations or the basis for his detention.
