The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Umar Radda, the All Progressives Congress (APC) candidate, the winner of the Katsina State governorship election held on Saturday, 18 March 2023. The announcement was made on Sunday night by INEC’s Returning Officer for the state, Professor Muazu Gusau, after collation officers from all 34 Local Government Areas had submitted their results.
According to Professor Gusau, Radda received 859,892 votes, defeating Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) candidate Yakubu Danmarke, who garnered 486,260 votes, and New Nigeria Peoples Party (NNPP) candidate Nura Khalid, who obtained 8,263 votes. In his formal declaration, Professor Gusau stated: “I, Professor Muazu Abubakar Gusau, the Returning Officer for the governorship election held in Katsina State on Saturday, 18 March 2023, hereby declare Umar Dikko Radda of the APC, having satisfied the requirements of the law, winner of the election, and is hereby returned elected as the Governor.”
The Returning Officer also disclosed the results for other candidates: Barau Tanimu (Accord Party) – 297 votes; Dankali Garba (Action Alliance) – 276 votes; Amin Ibrahim (ADC) – 925 votes; Ahmed Murtala (ADP) – 2,309 votes; Khado Kabir (BP) – 403 votes; Abu Ibrahim (LP) – 560 votes; Abdullahi I (NRM) – 896 votes; Gafari Imran (PRP) – 4,226 votes; Zakare Babangida (SDP) – 1,049 votes; and Tukir Saude (ZLP) – 132 votes.
Gusau reported that there were 3,516,719 registered voters, with 1,386,427 total votes cast. Of these, 1,365,848 were valid, while 20,589 were rejected. He noted that polls were cancelled in 88 polling units due to over‑voting and violence.
