A few hours after the House of Assembly election, the Ondo State Police Command announced that it had arrested numerous suspected criminals linked to various crises that erupted in several areas during the poll. Violence broke out in parts of the state, notably when suspected political thugs hijacked and destroyed ballot boxes and other voting materials in Ute Community, Ose Local Government Area. In Idanre, Idanre Local Government Area, two people—including a police officer—were struck by stray bullets.
In a statement released on Sunday, the police spokesperson for Ondo State, Mrs. Funmilayo Odunlami, confirmed that security agents had detained suspects across different parts of the state during the election. She did not disclose the exact number of arrests. According to the spokesperson, “The Ondo State Police Command has arrested suspects involved in various offences on election day. The suspects were arrested in different parts of the state, with some currently in the custody of the military. They were arrested in connection with unlawful possession of firearms, snatching of ballot boxes, attempted murder, and serious assault. All cases relating to electoral offences will be harmonised and dealt with in accordance with the Electoral Act after the completion of investigations.”
Mrs. Odunlami also expressed appreciation for the collaboration of sister agencies and law‑abiding citizens in maintaining law and order throughout the election period. She affirmed the command’s commitment to serving the people of Ondo State with a high sense of responsibility, professionalism, and adherence to universal policing best practices.
