A former presidential spokesperson, Doyin Okupe, has taken to social media to explain why Nigeria’s democracy faces serious problems. In a Twitter post on Monday afternoon, he argued that no amount of “change mantras” or youth activism will alter the country’s political landscape unless the underlying issues with its democratic system are addressed.
Okupe titled the post “The Problems With Nigeria’s Democracy” and listed seven “demons” that must be tackled to ensure progress: 1) pervasive corruption; 2) illiteracy; 3) crippling poverty; 4) massive youth unemployment; 5) lack of respect for the rule of law; 6) malleability of the judiciary; and 7) the absence of the fear of God. He wrote, “No amount of ‘change mantras’ in our politics, or activism of the youth will change the status quo. We must find a way to deal with the above seven demons and collectively pray and ask God to change our hearts towards righteousness and godliness. Else, we go round this unprogressive cycle endlessly.”
Okupe was the immediate past Director‑General of the Labour Party Presidential Campaign Council before stepping down in December 2022.
