The Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) has suspended the collation of governorship election results in certain areas of Abia and Enugu states. This announcement was made in a statement signed on Monday by Festus Okoye, the National Commissioner and Chairman of the Information and Voter Education Committee.

The decision follows an incident on Sunday, March 19, 2023, when thugs invaded INEC’s office in Obingwa Local Government Area, Abia State, and held officials hostage during the collation of results for that area. In Enugu State, similar concerns have been raised regarding the pending results from the Nsukka and Nkanu East Local Government Areas, prompting a call for a review.

Okoye explained that the commission met on Monday, March 20, 2023, to assess the conduct of the governorship and state assembly elections held nationwide on Saturday, March 18, 2023. The meeting concluded with a decision to immediately suspend further collation of governorship results in the affected parts of Abia and Enugu states. Specifically, the collation in Obingwa LGA (Abia) and the two outstanding LGAs in Enugu will be halted pending an immediate review before the process can be finalized.

The commission appealed for the understanding and patience of voters, political parties, and candidates in the affected states.
