Former governor of Enugu State, Chimaroke Nnam i, who now serves as the senator representing Enugu East in the National Assembly, said on Monday that Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi has “set the Igbo political trajectory 24 years back.” Nnam i, who lost his senatorial re‑election bid to Labour Party candidate Kelvin Chukwu on Sunday, accused Obi of “playing wicked and dangerous politics.” He made the claim via his official Twitter account, writing: “Peter ‘Gringory’ Obi has set the Igbo political trajectory 24 years back. He has become a twin blight and scourge on the land. His devious opium served to Christians within sections of Nigeria and to Igbo domiciled in different sections of Nigeria is wicked and dangerous.”
The Labour Party candidate polled 69,136 votes, defeating Nnam i of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP), who scored 48,701 votes. The former Enugu governor had endorsed All Progressives Congress (APC) presidential candidate Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, now president‑elect, against PDP’s Atiku Abubakar. Although Nnam i and some party members were suspended by the PDP leadership for anti‑party activities, he insisted he remained a party member and took the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu, and other officials to court.
On Monday, Nnam i announced his exit from the PDP in a signed statement. He thanked his constituents for their unwavering support over the years and explained that, after consulting with associates and constituents, he decided to quit the PDP due to irreconcilable differences with the party’s national leadership. He expressed hope that his modest contributions to constituency development would serve as building blocks for his successors.
Affirming his acquaintance with President‑elect Bola Tinubu and pledging to continue partnering with him, Nnam i thanked Nigerians—especially the Ebeano political family—and urged them to remain steadfast in the years ahead.
