The governorship candidate of the Social Democratic Party (SDP) in Rivers State, Magus Abe, has denied congratulating Siminialayi Fubara of the Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) on his emergence as governor‑elect. Abe, a former senator, also said he did not congratulate the state governor, Nyesom Wike, over the PDP’s victory in the March 18 governorship and House of Assembly elections.

Abe made these statements through his spokesperson, Parry Benson, in a release sent to journalists in Port Harcourt on Tuesday. He was responding to a social‑media report that claimed he had congratulated the PDP duo after the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) declared Fubara the winner with 302,614 votes. Abe asserted that the election was a sham, marred by violence and irregularities, and that the alleged congratulations were fabricated.

“I have not congratulated anyone and cannot congratulate anyone who emerged through such a process laden with high levels of irregularities. That was a sham, not an election,” the statement read. Abe added that he would address the people of Rivers and the SDP family at an appropriate time regarding the March 18, 2023 governorship election.

He urged Rivers residents to ignore the false report, describing it as the work of “conscience‑pricked” individuals who can no longer sleep because they have “murdered sleep.” Abe characterized the election as a process marked by intimidation, thuggery, harassment and blood‑letting, noting that citizens were not allowed to cast their votes freely and therefore it could not be described as an election.
