Governor Douye Diri of Bayelsa State has passed the Peoples Democratic Party’s screening for the November 11, 2023 governorship election. The PDP Governorship Screening Committee cleared him during an exercise at the party’s headquarters in Abuja on Tuesday, a development announced in a statement by the governor’s Chief Press Secretary, Daniel Alabrah.

Diri, who is seeking a second term, was the only aspirant from the party to submit the nomination and expression of interest forms for the upcoming governorship poll. The screening committee was chaired by Edo State Deputy Governor Philip Shaibu, who said the panel conducted the screening in accordance with party guidelines and electoral law. Shaibu confirmed that the governor met all the party’s requirements for the election.

“We have checked Governor Douye Diri’s documents and interviewed him,” Shaibu said. “After satisfying our question‑and‑answer process, we found him worthy to contest the election and free of any encumbrances concerning his documents. Even though he is the incumbent governor and a former Senator of the Federal Republic, we examined his paperwork page by page to ensure nothing contravenes the Electoral Law.”

Having met all conditions, the committee cleared Diri and wished him success in the forthcoming Bayelsa State election. “We know you have performed well as governor, and by the grace of God you will continue the good work you have started after the election to make Bayelsa the state Bayelsans dream to have.”
