The Minister of State for Labour and Employment, Festus Keyamo, has responded to a petition filed by Labour Party presidential candidate Peter Obi, who is seeking to annul the February 25 presidential election won by All Progressives Congress candidate Bola Tinubu. Obi had previously challenged the election outcome and asked the court for access to all sensitive materials deployed by the Independent National Electoral Commission (INEC) for the vote.
On Tuesday, the Labour Party candidate lodged another suit at the election tribunal, contesting INEC’s declaration of Tinubu as the winner. Obi argued that Tinubu “was not duly elected by the majority of the lawful votes cast at the time of the election.” He alleged rigging in eleven states—Rivers, Lagos, Taraba, Benue, Adamawa, Imo, Bauchi, Borno, Kaduna, and Plateau—and said he would demonstrate this through the uploaded results.
Reacting to the petition in a post on his verified Twitter handle on Wednesday, Keyamo said that all deceit, lies, and disinformation surrounding the straightforward issues would be exposed in court. He wrote: “I am excited about the issues raised in those election petitions. All the deceit, lies, disinformation, and misinformation about otherwise very simple and clear issues are about to be busted by our Law Lords. Whoever continues to argue after that should relocate to another planet.” He added that Nigerians would finally see a stark contrast between calm, dispassionate adjudication and the “hoopla caused by garrulous spokespersons shaking and falling on stage, ignorant TV hosts turned debaters, misinformed documentaries, illiterate tweeps, and some dancing Hijabi mamas.”
