The National Universities Commission (NUC) has fully accredited seven academic programmes at Salem University, Lokoja, Kogi State. The Vice‑Chancellor, Professor Alewo Johnson‑Akubo, announced the approval on Wednesday while speaking to journalists in Lokoja. The accreditation letter, dated 9 March, was signed by Deputy Director of Programme Accreditation, Arc. S.S. Ikani, on behalf of NUC Executive Secretary Professor Abubakar Rasheed.
The seven accredited programmes are Bachelor of Science degrees in Computer Science, Information Technology, Geology, Microbiology, Biochemistry, and a combined MSc/MBA in Business Administration. “With this development, all our courses are now fully accredited,” the Vice‑Chancellor said, noting that the news was welcomed by the university’s management, staff, and students, who needed the accreditation to operate as a full‑fledged institution.
Professor Johnson‑Akubo explained that the accreditation followed the NUC’s organised visit to the university’s academic programmes in November and December of the previous year. “We give God the glory now that all our programmes in the seven Colleges have been fully accredited by the NUC,” he declared. He added that, as a result, Salem University Lokoja can admit more students for the 2022/2023 academic year, which remains open for applications.
The Vice‑Chancellor also highlighted recent infrastructural developments that now enable the university to accommodate a larger student body. He praised the Chancellor, Archbishop Sam Amaga, for his “impressive and encouraging leadership qualities, driving the university to greater heights.”
