No fewer than 25 people lost their lives in Udubo along the Hadeja‑Potiskum road in Gamawa Local Government Area of Bauchi State following a fatal crash. Ten others sustained varying degrees of injuries in the incident, which involved a Toyota Hummer bus. The crash occurred on Thursday at 4:30 p.m.
The Sector Commander of the Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) in Bauchi State, Yusuf Abdullahi, confirmed the incident to our correspondent on Friday morning. He reported that a total of 35 people were involved: 19 male adults, 11 female adults, two male children and three female children. According to Abdullahi, the bus driver lost control and struck 11 people who were taking shelter under a tree near a car wash.
Abdullahi explained that the crash involved an Ash Commercial Toyota Hummer bus with registration number JMA 59XA. The cause was overloading and a speed violation that led to a tyre burst and loss of control. The driver, whose name has not yet been released, drove into the group of people sheltering under the tree because of the hot weather. Twenty‑four passengers were inside the bus, while the remaining 11 individuals were under the tree, as reported by the Nigeria Police Force.
Emergency responders arrived promptly, rescued the victims, and transported them to the Federal Medical Center in Azare for treatment and confirmation. At the hospital, a medical doctor confirmed 25 deaths—nine male adults, 11 female adults, two male children and three female children—and ten people with various bruises. The bodies were deposited at the FMC, Azare, where they will be released for burial, while the injured continue to receive treatment.
The FRSC commander expressed deep sadness over the tragedy and cautioned motorists against reckless driving and overloading. “It is very sad and unfortunate that these people died because of reckless driving and overloading,” he said. “I call on drivers to adopt practices that do not endanger their lives and those of other road users. This will reduce crashes that often lead to loss of lives and property.”
