The Super Eagles of Nigeria failed to secure a much‑needed win against the Wild Dogs of Guinea‑Bissau in the 2023 Africa Cup of Nations qualifiers at the Moshood Abiola Stadium in Abuja. The Wild Dogs triumphed in a 1‑0 thriller on Friday, a result that cost Nigeria the top spot in Group A, which now belongs to Guinea‑Bissau.
Before the match, Nigeria led the group with six points, while Guinea‑Bissau had four. Mama Balde scored the only goal of the game in the 29th minute, giving his side a 1‑0 lead and taking them to seven points, securing first place and boosting their chances of playing in Ivory Coast next year. Guinea‑Bissau’s campaign has included a 5‑1 victory over São Tomé and Príncipe and a 2‑2 draw with Sierra Leone.
In contrast, the Eagles began their qualifying run with a 2‑1 win over Sierra Leone and a 10‑0 thrashing of São Tomé and Príncipe. Despite this strong start, Super Eagles coach José Peseiro expressed confidence of a positive result before the game and defended his team selection ahead of the clash.
