A crash involving a train and a staff bus carrying Lagos State government workers occurred on Thursday in Oshodi, Lagos. The collision happened on March 9 at the PWD railway crossing in Ikeja, the state capital. After the impact, the bus was dragged by the train, which eventually stopped in the Sogunle area. The accident left six people dead and 96 injured, who were hospitalized in various government hospitals across the state.
The Lagos State Government has announced that the bus driver, Oluwaseun Osinbajo, will be charged with manslaughter. Osinbajo was immediately apprehended and handed over to the police for investigation and possible prosecution. A statement from the Director of Public Affairs at the Lagos State Ministry of Justice said that, after the investigation, the findings were forwarded to the Directorate of Public Prosecutions (DPP) for further statutory action.
The DPP reviewed the case file and found a prima facie case of manslaughter and grievous bodily harm against the driver. He is to be charged with six counts of manslaughter and ten counts of grievous bodily harm, offenses contrary to Sections 224 and 245 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015. The Office of the DPP will file the charges immediately, but the driver’s arraignment before the High Court of Lagos State will be postponed until he is fully fit to stand trial, as he sustained serious injuries in the accident.
