Brazilian football legend Ronaldinho believes that former Nigerian captain and midfield maestro Jay‑Jay Okocha never fulfilled his potential because of his move to Bolton Wanderers in the English Premier League. Okocha joined Bolton in 2002 after four years at Paris Saint‑Germain, where he made 84 appearances and scored 12 goals. He spent another four seasons at Bolton, racking up 124 appearances, but Ronaldinho, his former PSG teammate, feels the transfer to England was a mistake.

“Jay‑Jay Okocha, wow! That man made football listen to him. In training we would watch him do a freestyle; whatever he wanted to do, the ball would follow,” Ronaldinho said. “His problem was that he was too eager to move to England. I didn’t like the decision. In Italy or Spain they allow you to play your skilled football without interfering with your style. In La Liga or Serie A he would definitely have a chance with a big team because they love skilled players there. In England you stand no chance of playing for a big team if you’re that skilled; they think it’s not necessary.”

Ronaldinho has never hidden his admiration for Oka cha. The Nigerian star enjoyed an 18‑year, nomadic career across Germany, Turkey, France, Qatar and England, and became an icon at Bolton, where he helped the club rise from the relegation zone to European competition for the first time. In a 2021 interview with talkSPORT, Okocha admitted that the move to Bolton was not fully thought out. “It’s obvious I didn’t really do my research before signing for Bolton,” he told talkSPORT Breakfast. “As a football person, football comes first, not the city, not the lifestyle, but one thing that’s clear is that the training ground was different, the attitude towards the games was different.”

Okocha spent his entire Bolton career under Sam Allardyce, achieving considerable success at the then‑named Reebok Stadium.
