General Oladipo Diya (retd), former governor of Ogun State and Senator‑elect for Ogun East, described the death of Lt. Gen. Oladipo Diya (retd), former Chief of General Staff under General Sani Abacha’s military regime, as a great loss. Diya died at the age of 79, and his passing was announced in a message signed by his son, Prince Oyesinmilola Diya, on behalf of the family. He passed away in the early hours of Sunday, 26 March.

Diya served as Chief of the General Staff from 1994 until his arrest for alleged treason in 1997. As Military Administrator of Ogun State, he was noted for his exemplary enforcement of the War Against Indiscipline, particularly his focus on creating a cleaner environment. His role as a military strategist and stabilising figure during the military era will not be forgotten.

In a statement issued on Sunday, the former governor said, “The demise of General Oladipo (retd) is a great loss to our country, Nigeria, and to Ogun State in particular. General Diya, as Chief of General Staff, played his part as a military strategist and his stabilising role during the military era can never be forgotten. He will surely be missed by many people for different reasons, especially for his statesmanship.”

Daniel expressed his personal grief, noting his close relationship with General Diya both in and out of public office. He prayed that Diya may rest in eternal peace in the bosom of his Creator and asked for strength for Diya’s family to bear the loss.
