Luanda — On Monday, Foreign Minister Téte António sent a letter to United Nations Secretary‑General António Guterres reiterating his rejection of reports that Angola had dispatched mercenaries to fight in the Russia‑Ukraine war. The Ministry of Foreign Affairs, whose statement was obtained by ANGOP, said the minister also addressed a note to Portuguese authorities, “vehemently rejecting such fallacious information.”
The minister described the allegations as a deliberate attempt to tarnish Angola’s reputation and to confuse both national and international public opinion about the country’s principled stance on a peaceful resolution of the conflict. He emphasized that Angola’s position on the war is clear and well known.
In his correspondence with the UN Secretary‑General, Téte António reminded that Angola has itself been a victim of mercenary activity and foreign invasions, and that it has consistently condemned such acts with strong measures to deter them. He said it was important to inform the UN of this matter to reaffirm Angola’s commitment to the International Convention against the Recruitment, Use, Financing and Training of Mercenaries, adopted by the UN General Assembly in New York on 4 December 1989.
The minister held CNN‑Portugal fully responsible for the damage caused to Angola’s image by the “fallacious and inaccurate” report. The broadcaster had aired a story on 24 March claiming that Angola had sent mercenaries to fight in the Russia‑Ukraine war.
