PDP National Chairman Dr. Iyorchia Ayu

Some members of the Peoples Democratic Party from Igyorev Ward in Ipav, Gboko Local Government Area of Benue State, stormed the Wadata Plaza—headquarters of the party in Abuja—on Tuesday in solidarity with the suspended national chairman. The group, known as the Expanded Igyorov Ward Executives and kin to the suspended chairman, expressed their support and passed a confidence vote for the embattled leader.

The suspension of Ayu was announced on Sunday by the ward executives of Igyorov Ward. Ward Secretary Mr. Vangeryina Dooyum, on behalf of Ward Chairman Kashi Philip, cited alleged anti‑party activities as the reason. Subsequently, a High Court in Makurdi issued an interim injunction restraining Dr. Ayu from presenting himself as the PDP National Chairman. Justice W.I. Kpochi granted the order on Monday in suit No. MHC/85/2023, filed by Terhide Utaan with Ayu and the PDP as defendants. The case was adjourned until 17 April for further hearing.

The kinsmen categorically disclaimed any involvement with the purported letter of no confidence and suspension dated 24 March. Stephen Shimahile, a member of the Expanded Igyorov Ward Executives who read the press conference text, said: “Following the letter to our office dated 27 March 2023, signed by 16 members of the Executive Committee from Igyorov Council Ward, the letter was duly served in our office and we stand with them. The Executive Committee of PDP Gboko Local Government Chapter hereby pledges total support for his pragmatic leadership style in taking our party forward. The public is hereby notified to disregard the purported suspension.”
