One person was confirmed dead on Tuesday, and at least seven others were injured after a fire gutted two plazas at the Balogun Market in Lagos State, according to the National Emergency Management Agency (NEMA). NEMA reported on its website that medical teams evacuated the deceased and the injured, while police arrested four individuals suspected of looting the wares.

The fire broke out around 10:00 a.m. at No. 32 Gbajumo Street, Lagos Island, and quickly spread to a five‑storey building and an adjacent three‑storey structure. The five‑storey building, which housed 350 shops, showed signs of collapse from the heat, with the blockwork portion giving way and only the metal framework remaining. The three‑storey building, containing 230 shops, was completely burnt down.

Federal, state, and local response agencies are on the ground, and NEMA confirmed that the fire has now been brought under total control. The incident resulted in one fatality and seven injuries.
