The Lagos State Government, led by Governor Babajide Sanwo‑Olu, announced compensation measures for the victims of the March 9 collision between a train and a staff bus. In a statement released on Tuesday, the government pledged to provide employment for one employable child of each deceased victim and a concessionary scholarship for one of their biological children. This response follows the submission of a report by a nine‑member committee established after the accident.
The committee’s findings indicated that the crash resulted in six fatalities out of 102 passengers, with 85 people on the staff bus and 17 on the train. Among its recommendations were death benefits from the Group Life Insurance scheme for the families of the deceased, employment for one employable child of each victim, and a concessionary scholarship for one biological child. Injured victims were to receive full insurance claim payments as compensation, and any staff member who sustained a permanent disability would be compensated in accordance with the state’s Group Life Insurance policy, along with other benefits.
The committee, composed of permanent secretaries from relevant ministries within the state public service, was tasked with identifying the families of the deceased, their dependents, and the injured officers, and with determining appropriate compensation packages for each affected family and state employee. A final decision on the committee’s recommendations will be made by the State Executive Council, with further directives to be communicated by the Head of Service, Mr. Hakeem Muri‑Okunola.
In addition, a manslaughter case has been filed against the driver of the staff bus, Oluwaseun Osinbajo. The state government stated that once he has completed his recuperation, he will be formally charged in court.
