The Federal Road Safety Corps (FRSC) has begun prosecuting the drivers involved in the Liba and Bunza accidents that caused numerous deaths and injuries. The corps said the action is intended to protect passengers’ rights and deter other traffic violators.
In a statement on Tuesday, FRSC spokesperson Bisi Kazeem quoted Corps Marshal Dauda Ali Biu, who condemned the ongoing violation of traffic rules by some drivers. Biu warned that reckless behavior on highways has led to the destruction of property and loss of life, and he ordered a nationwide clampdown on such offenders.
The Marshal directed the FRSC Legal Department to initiate immediate prosecution of the reckless drivers responsible for the fatal crashes in Liba and Bunza. He emphasized that enforcing legal speed limits and other traffic regulations is essential to prevent further loss of lives and property. Commanding Officers were also instructed to launch an aggressive, nationwide crackdown on violators.
The accidents occurred on Sunday, 26 March, and Monday, 27 March 2023, in Kebbi State. On 27 March at 17:30 hrs, a DAF trailer (registration SKF 131XA) carrying 61 people on the Jega‑Yauri route crashed near Bunza. Of the 61 occupants, 36 victims—including one adult female and one female child—sustained injuries such as fractures, bruises, and head trauma. Twenty‑three victims—21 adult males, one male child and one adult female—were killed. The crash was attributed to overloading and a tyre burst that caused loss of control. Injured victims were taken to Maiyama General Hospital, while the deceased were placed in the hospital morgue.
The previous day, 26 March, a collision at Kwanar Tunga Junction in Kamba Local Government Council involved a Toyota Carina saloon (registration BDG 129CZ) and a Mercedes‑Benz tipper (registration NSR 495 NS). Fourteen people were involved: three adult males and eleven adult females. Two male adults were injured, and twelve victims—one male adult and eleven female adults—were killed. The investigation identified excessive speed and improper overtaking as the primary causes. The victims were taken to Bunza General Hospital in Kamba.
Dauda Biu expressed condolences to the families of the deceased and wished a swift recovery for the injured, reaffirming the FRSC’s commitment to making the roads safer for all users.
