The Ugandan army (UPDF) has carried out another surprise attack, killing a senior ADF commander in the dense forests of the Democratic Republic of Congo. Deputy defence spokesperson Col. Deo Akiiki said that troops operating under Operation Shuja killed Seka Wankaba at around 1:30 p.m. in Mwalika Valley, eastern DRC. Akiiki described Wankaba as a Ugandan of the Musoga tribe, a member of ADF leader Mularo Seguja’s group, and a highly trained improvised‑explosive‑device (IED) expert.
A few weeks earlier, the UPDF eliminated Ssegujja—also known as Fezza, Feeza or Mulalo—one of the most wanted ADF commanders. He was considered a “big fish” within the rebel group, the third‑most senior leader, and had previously served as chief of combat and operations before working with artillery and eventually becoming a commander.
Over the weekend, the Ugandan army announced that it had killed 20 ADF fighters in a surprise raid on their camp inside the DRC. Following the attack, the rebels fragmented into smaller groups that raid villages before slipping back into hiding. Speaking on Wednesday, Col. Akiiki said the army will continue to inflict damage on the rebel‑terrorist outfit, adding, “Our troops won’t relent until the ADF command and control structure is fully decimated.”
Operation Shuja began in December 2021 when the Ugandan army entered the thick DRC forests to hunt ADF rebels accused of masterminding the twin blasts in Kampala and other attacks that killed more than ten people and injured many others. The operation—named after the Kiswahili word for bravery and conducted jointly with the Congolese army (FARDC)—has resulted in over 400 ADF fighters killed, several areas liberated, and hostages freed.
