A 38‑year‑old man, Idowu Afeez, was arraigned before the Ogba Magistrate Court in Ikeja, Lagos State, on charges of defrauding Banjo Samuel of N4.8 million. According to the prosecution, Afeez pretended to purchase a 2013 Toyota Highlander from the United States on Samuel’s behalf, but instead diverted the money for his own use in the Egbeda area of Lagos.

The defendant appeared before Magistrate S.O. Obasa on three felony counts: obtaining money by false pretence, stealing, and related offences. Police prosecutor Kokoye Olusegun informed the court that the alleged crime occurred in Egbeda and cited Sections 411, 314(3) and 287(1)(a)(b) of the 2015 Criminal Law of Lagos State as the applicable statutes.

The charge sheet stated: “Idowu Afeez and others, now at large, on or before 17 June 2022 and 25 July 2022, at Egbeda, Lagos State, in the Lagos Magisterial District, conspired to commit felony by obtaining money by false pretence and stealing, in violation of Section 411.” It further alleged that Afeez, with intent to defraud, obtained N4,800,000 from Banjo Olufemi Samuel under the false pretext of purchasing the vehicle, breaching Section 314(3). Finally, it charged that Afeez dishonestly obtained the same sum and converted it for personal use, violating Section 287(1)(a)(b).

Magistrate Mrs. S.O. Obasa granted bail of N500,000, requiring two responsible sureties of equal amount who must be blood relatives with verified addresses. The case was adjourned to 9 May for a mention.
