Sheikh Mansour bin Zayed Al Nahyan, the 52‑year‑old owner of Manchester City, was appointed vice‑president of the United Arab Emirates on Wednesday, marking a reshuffle of the Gulf monarchy’s senior ranks. He now serves alongside Dubai’s ruler and UAE prime minister, Sheikh Mohammed bin Rashid Al Maktoum, in this newly created role.

The appointment comes nearly a year after Sheikh Mansour’s brother, Sheikh Mohamed bin Zayed (commonly known as “MBZ”), was named president following the death of their half‑brother, Sheikh Khalifa, who had been sidelined by ill health for years. In the same reshuffle, MBZ’s son, Sheikh Khaled bin Mohamed bin Zayed, was designated crown prince of Abu Dhabi—the wealthiest of the UAE’s seven emirates—a position traditionally indicating the next in line for the presidency.

Speculation had surrounded the succession to the Abu Dhabi crown prince role, with both Sheikh Khaled and Sheikh Tahnoun bin Zayed, another of MBZ’s brothers, considered potential candidates. Sheikh Tahnoun, who serves as the UAE’s national security adviser and chairs the ADQ sovereign‑wealth fund, was appointed deputy ruler of Abu Dhabi alongside Hazza bin Zayed, yet another brother of the president.
